Ubuntu restore from backup

Goal: Restore Ubuntu backup within IONOS DCD

Step 1: Create a backup

Create a backup by following these instructions Ubuntu Backup Agent Installation and Backup

Step 2: Get the recovery ISO and upload to your DCD

  • Getting Bootable ISO for restore
    • Get bootable iso by going to https://dcd.ionos.com → Backup Console → your backup unit
    • Go to the Devices → and select your instance
    • From the Right Nav select “Recovery” and then from the upper right “More ways to recover”
    • Select “Download ISO Image”
      • Note the registration token like F594-0384-4079
    • Once downloaded, upload the ISO to the new data center outlined here “FTP ISO Upload” note the name Boot_media.iso
    • Note: the ISO upload and scanning process can take approx 20 minutes

Step 3: Setup an instance to restore to

Setup instance in new DC to restore to

  • Login to https://dcd.ionos.com
  • Create a new VDC in the data center to restore to
  • Within the new VDC drag and drop to create a new instance with the same specs and the instance to be restored from example:  same CPU, RAM, DISK.
  • Drag and drop to attach the CD ROM drive object (See cdrom setup video here)
    • When asked for which image to connect select the previously uploaded Boot_media.iso
    • Check the box to boot from device
  •  Provision the changes

Step 4: Perform Recovery

  • Within the https://dcd.ionos.com VDC right click on the recovery instance and select “Console”
  • In the Acronis boot screen select the “Rescue” option
  • Choose the “Register Media” option
  • Enter the previously copied registration token
  • Choose the “Recover” option
  • Select “Data” and in the next screen click “Browse”
  • You should see the backup for your source machine under the “Cloud Storage” list
  • Select that item and click OK
  • Under the backup contents section change the drop down to “Disks”
  • Select all of the “Disks” and click OK
  • Click OK in the final screen to begin the recovery process
  • When the recovery is complete click “Close”
  • Close the Console screen and within the DCD remove the CDROM by right clicking on the CDROM and choosing “Delete”
  • Select the remaining Disk and change its OS type to Linux in the right Nav drop down and click on “Make Boot Device” button in the upper right
  • Click Provision Now to apply changes
  • Your recovered instance should now be ready for use
